Classroom Management: CHAMPs
CHAMPs I is offered to assist classroom teachers in designing (or fine tuning) a classroom management plan that overtly teaches student expectation and behaviors. This results in higher rates of work completion and a reduction in the frequency and/or intensity of misbehavior.
The students are directly taught to meet expectations by detailing each classroom activity and transition using the CHAMPs acronym:
| C |
Conversation |
|
How, why, and to whom may students talk? |
| H |

How do students get help or teacher attention? |
| A |

What is the task or end product of the activity? |
| M |
Movement |
How much, when and why may students move around? |
| P |

The CHAMPs program is organized into modules. The modules include specific tasks or competencies that address Time Management, Organizational Skills, Strategies to Increase On-Task Time, Increasing Motivation, and Creating a Positive Classroom Environment.
Participants will learn to self assess their current competencies as well as to determine the level of structure required to meet the needs of their students and consequently, how to implement a classroom management plan to correspond with those needs.
CHAMPs II is offered as a follow up for participants of CHAMPs I. The first part of the training follows up on the tasks or competencies completed since the CHAMPs I training and reviews the implementation of chosen classroom management techniques.
The second part of CHAMPs II details specific techniques for managing and reducing student misbehaviors. Participants learn monitoring strategies that will help them make data based decisions about student behavior and how to create a behavior management plan for a high risk student.
