It only takes one person to make a potentially life-changing difference in the life of a youth who is in need of support because of bullying, harassment or stigma due to her or his identity. While there are many ways in which school staff can facilitate a safe environment for vulnerable LGBTQ students, one of the most widely recognized methods is by displaying a Safe Space Poster or Safe Place Sticker in your environment. This poster or sticker lets students know that there is an easily identifiable network of LGBTQ school community members and allies. When any student sees a poster or sticker in a classroom, department or office, he or she can presume that the staff person is a) accepting of LGBTQ individuals, b) has basic knowledge about issues of sexual orientation and gender identity or expression and c) is willing to provide resources and support.
