Our Partners
As the central core with extensive networks and collaborative agreements, The
School Board of Broward County (SBBC) serves as an optimum point of early
recognition, prevention, and intervention. This ability to be a constant in a
child's life allows for continuity of care, planning, and follow up - thus
ensuring the child and family and community's needs are met. This
collaborative approach capitalizes on the community linkages that each of
these entities, which represent the educational, health, and community-based
provider systems, have with quality resources throughout Broward County,
including faith-based, community-based, and government entities.

The ASPIRA Association, Inc. is the only national
nonprofit organization devoted solely to the
education and leadership development of Puerto
Rican and other Latino youth. ASPIRA takes its
name from the Spanish verb aspirar, "aspire."
Since 1961 ASPIRA has pursued its mission of
empowering the Latino community through the
development of its youth. All of ASPIRA's goals
and activities spring from one basic belief:
Puerto Ricans and Latinos have the collective
potential to move their community forward.
ASPIRA looks at Latino youth and sees this
potential; leaders waiting to emerge. With
community-based offices in large cities of six
states and Puerto Rico, ASPIRA's 1,100 staff
members work with over 50,000 youth and their
families each year to develop that potential.
These are our Aspirantes---those
youth who will become educated, committed leaders
for the community's future benefit.

Friends of Children, Youth and Families, Inc.
(hereafter referred to as Friends of Children) is
a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) agency that recently
celebrated its 13th year of providing services to
thousands of troubled children and families in
Broward County, Florida. Founded in 1992 by
Willie Myles, an educator and child advocate,
Friends of Children was born to be an agency that
deals with the basic needs of our children and
families, as well as the root causes of their
dilemmas. Initially supported only by Mr. Myles's
$7,000 of life savings, Friends of Children has
evolved to become one of Broward's premier
providers of specialized services to diverse
populations. In the bible, Jeremiah 8:20 reminds
us that "The harvest has past, the summer has
ended, and yet we are not saved". Though we are
proud of our growth and successes, we understand
clearly that there is much more work to be done.

The United Way of Broward County created the
Commission on Substance Abuse in November of 1988
during the height of a crack cocaine epidemic
that was sweeping south Florida and the nation at
large. Today, its primary role is to serve as a
coalition-building organization that brokers
partnerships between federal, state and local
agencies to foster, develop and enhance
integrated counter-drug efforts throughout
Broward County and to search for innovative and
effective ways to address the issue of substance
abuse. Since its inception, the Commission has
directed over 25-million dollars to
community-based programs that fight and treat
substance abuse and help prevent youth from using
drugs. Through a federal block grant that it
coordinates in Broward County, the Commission
currently directs funding to and supervises over
20 programs that focus on preventing drug use and
preventing violence. Twice honored with
invitations to the White House and receptions
with the President, the Commission also was
recognized in 1996 as "Anti-Drug Coalition of the
Year" by Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of
America (CADCA).
