What is the problem?
Divorce is a reality for us, or for someone we care about since over half of today’s marriages will end in divorce. During this difficult period, parents may be preoccupied with their own problems, but still continue to be the most important people in their children’s lives. Take a look into the world of teens and how divorce feels from their point of view. What are their greatest fears when their parents divorce?
“It is my fault”
“I will be abandoned by one or both of my parents.”
“I will have to choose a parent and pick sides.”
Why should I care about divorce?
In this episode, we learn the fears and affects of poorly handled divorces. We can learn to be alert to signs of distress in both younger and older children. As teenagers and adults, badly handled divorces can produce low self-esteem, sleep disturbances, anger, anxiety, stress, loneliness and an increased likelihood for depression. It can cause problems with friendships and relationships, seriously impair academic and job performance, and lead to underachievement and increased vulnerability to drug and alcohol abuse.
