CHAMPs: Classroom Management
Do you want to change the social climate in your school so that all students and teachers feel safe, positive, and ready to learn? Such a transformation is within your reach with CHAMPs, a Proactive and Positive Approach to Classroom Management. CHAMPs allows administrators and teachers to maximize learning time while promoting a mentally healthy school environment. This proactive approach can be summarized in three words, “Structure for Success”.
CHAMPS instructional DVD for grades K-5 and 6-12 is a tool that can be used to support, reinforce and sustain some of the important components taught in CHAMPS. The instructional video has six key section on CHAMPs classroom management for both grade levels – Attention Signals Video, Expectations, Transitions, Noncontingent Attention, Corrective Procedures, and Interviews.

The success of any efforts often lie with the fidelity and consistency in which they are applied. Many schools in the Broward County Public School system have been trained in CHAMPs – take a look at one that is implementing it throughout their school - Sunland Park Elementary School uses CHAMPS to help students with Academics and Behavior!
There are several types of CHAMPs trainings available depending on the participants’ needs:
CHAMPs I - Classroom Management strategies for teachers, K-8
CHAMPs for High School – Specific examples and techniques for teachers, 9-12.
CHAMPs II – Behavior Management Strategies for all teachers K-12. CHAMPs I is a prerequisite
Coaching CHAMPs – Strategies for anyone who supports teachers in the classroom, including support staff, team leaders, behavior support, area support, etc.). CHAMPs I is a prerequisite
CHAMPs for Administrators – An informal overview regarding the content and support of CHAMPs in the classroom from an Administrator’s point of view.
CHAMPs for Non Instructional – Extending the strategies for ALL staff in a school, including para-professional, cafeteria staff, custodians, office employees, after school care providers, etc.
CHAMPs Whole School Immersion – A positive approach involves constructive, encouraging, and affirmative interactions between students and staff school-wide. Please click on the following link to review the CHAMPs training workshop agreement CHAMPs Workshop Agreement for expectations and requirements. In addition, it is strongly recommended that a master teacher at the school take the COACHING CHAMPs training, and coach/support the teachers in their effort to implement CHAMPs in the classroom.

CHAMPs I: A Proactive and Positive Approach to Classroom Management
CHAMPs is designed to assist classroom teachers in developing (or fine tuning) a classroom management plan that overtly teaches student expectations and behaviors. This results in higher rates of student achievement and a reduction in the frequency and/or intensity of misbehavior. In addition, implementing CHAMPs effectively changes a school’s climate to safe and welcoming.
The students are directly taught to meet expectations by detailing each classroom activity and transition using the CHAMPs acronym:
C Conversation: How, why, and to whom may students talk?
H Help: How do students get help or teacher attention?
A Activity: What is the task or end product of the activity?
M Movement: When and why may students move around?
P Participation: What does the on task behavior look like?
S Signal: How do you Signal your students?
CHAMPs is organized into modules. The modules include specific tasks or competencies that address Time Management, Organizational Skills, Strategies to Increase On-Task Time, Increasing Motivation, and Creating a Positive Classroom Environment.
Participants will learn to self assess their current competencies as well as to determine the level of structure required to meet the needs of their students and consequently, how to implement a classroom management plan to correspond with those needs.
CHAMPs II: A Proactive and Positive Approach to Behavior Management
This workshop is offered as a follow up for participants of CHAMPs I. The first part of the training follows up on the tasks or competencies completed since the CHAMPs I training, and reviews the implementation of chosen classroom management techniques.
The second part of CHAMPs II details specific techniques for managing and reducing student misbehavior. Participants learn monitoring strategies that will help them make data based decisions about student behavior and how to create a behavior management plan for a high risk student.
CHAMPs for High School
This workshop presents specific classroom strategies for managing classroom behavior in proactive and positive ways. It provides teachers with essential knowledge and tools to create positive and lifelong impact on student learning. Nine chapters focus on vision, organization, teaching expectations, conducting the first month of school, motivation, monitoring, responding to misbehavior and class wide motivational systems. Within each chapter, a series of tasks or competencies are available for participant self assessment within their own teaching situation.
