Sarah Arvelo earned her MSW from Barry University.
BA in Psychology from Fordham University/New
York. She is a member of American Counseling
Association. She has fifteen years work experience
with adolescents and their families. She has worked
with teen parents. She worked extensively with Dual
Diagnosis patients in a psychiatric hospital. She
also worked in B.A.R.C. in the outpatient unit. She
has been a family counselor with the School Board
for the past twelve years.

Rene Blagrove earned her BA from the University of
Stony Brook and her MSW from Florida International
University. Rene has nine years of experience in the
social service field that range from developing,
coordinating and monitoring programs and services
for SED and at risk children, working with families,
the substance abuse and mentally ill populations.
She is currently a B.L.A.S.T. Family Therapist at
Arthur Ashe Middle School.

Carla Lopez-Brinkerhoff, a Licensed Mental Health
Counselor, earned her Masters Degree in Mental
Health Counseling from Nova Southeastern University
in Davie, Florida. She has been working in the
field of Mental Health for the last 5 years. She
worked in the field of adolescent Substance Abuse
and Dual Diagnosis for 4 years followed a position
of Supervisor of the Wraparound program at the
agency where she worked. She has been working for
the School Board of Broward County for 3 months and
is currently working as a B.A.S.S. Facilitator at H.
D. Perry Middle School.

Colin Brutus, a Clinical Social Work Intern, earned
his MSW from Barry University in Florida. He has
been working in the field of Social Work for over 6
years. He worked for the Public Defender's office in
Miami interviewing and representing inmates as a
Paralegal at bond hearing, followed by a school
based therapist position for a social service agency
helping families and children. He has been working
for the school board of Broward County for a short
period of three months as a B.A.S.S. Facilitator at
Parkway Middle in Fort-Lauderdale, Florida.

Patrick Chalmers, a Registered Mental Health Intern,
graduated from the University of Miami with a
Bachelor's Degree in Criminology and furthered his
educational career by graduating from Nova
Southeastern University with a Master's in Mental

Health for 9 years. He is currently working for the
School Board of Broward County as a B.L.A.S.T.
Family Counselor at Pompano Middle School.

Maricel Lopez-Currence, a Licensed Marriage and
Family Therapist, earned her BS in Child Development
and Family Studies at the University of New Mexico
and MSFT at Saint Thomas University in Miami. She
has been working in the field of mental health for
the past ten years. She worked for a social service
agency in Miami for 8 years providing therapy to
children demonstrating severe emotional and
behavioral problems. She is currently working as a
B.L.A.S.T. Family Counselor at Olsen Middle School.

Prevention Specialist
Suzanne Edgar, a prevention specialist, earned her
Bachelor of Arts in Education from Florida Atlantic
University and her Masters degree in Human Relations
from Florida International University. She has been
working in the field of education for the School
Board of Broward County for the past 26 years.
Currently, Suzanne is working in the Office of
Prevention Programs specializing in Drug Prevention,
Child Abduction Prevention, and Health Education.
Her presentations are available for students (6 -
12) as well as parent and community groups. Also,
Suzanne is the school board's American Heart
Association Training Center Coordinator, responsible
for all of the district's CPR/AED/First Aid
instructors as well as AHA courses offered for staff
development and certification.

Audrey has a B.A. in Psychology, M.A. Counseling
Psychology, M.S. Education Administration,
Certificate of Proficiency in HIV/AIDS from
University of Miami, and Certifications in
Prevention and Addiction Studies. She has worked
with Department of Children's and Family in the
areas of Forensic Psychology and Division of Blind
Services. She also worked with social service
agencies as a Clinical Forensic Specialist and
Prevention Counselor. Audrey Ennis' research
interests include multicultural issues, family
intervention therapy, HIV/AIDS in a Forensic
setting, Coping Styles of Homeless men, Domestic
Violence, and Depression and Aging. She has been
working for the School Board of Broward County for
past five years and is currently working as a Family
Counselor/B.A.S.S. Facilitator at McNicol Middle
School.

Helen Evans earned her MSSW from the University of
Texas at Austin. She is a Licensed Clinical Social
Worker and is a member of the National Association
of Social Workers. She worked as a school social
worker, supervisor, and field instructor for eight
years in Texas. She also taught college courses in
the Behavioral Sciences Department at St. Edward's
University. She is currently working as Family
Counselor at Westpine Middle School in South
Florida.

Clerk Specialist III
Thema H. Hakizimana is currently a Clerk Specialist
III with Prevention Programs. She is secretary to
Stephani Weaver (Prevention Specialist) with the
District Office. Thema is certified in several
areas of Office Professional Programs and several
years of College Education where she studied Child
Psychology. She is the assistant to Mrs. Weaver in
coordinating, maintaining, and providing workshop
information to and for all Peer Counselors and the
Peer Counseling Program in Broward County Schools.
She is a proud mother and has an endearing love for
children. Thema also Mentors children with the
Mentoring Program.

Prevention Specialist
Tyyne is a Canadian who has been in Florida for 16
years. She was one of the first Behavior Specialists
in the BCSB. She has written the behavior programs
at several centers for emotionally and behaviorally
disturbed students. She is a mental health therapist
and certified teacher. She has taught DOP and Grade
4-5. Currently, she is helping to organize the
CHAMPs initiative in the district. Tyyne provides
classroom management and behavior management to
teachers throughout the district.

Family Counselor
Sharon Forde-Marshall, a Licensed Mental Health
counselor, earned her Masters of Science in Mental
Health counseling from Nova Southeastern University
in Florida and a Bachelor of Arts in Forensic
Psychology at John Jay college of criminal justice
in New York. She has worked with various
not-for-profit agencies, serving children and
families during the last 8 years and has found her
position extremely satisfying and enlightening.
She has also conducted various parenting workshops
and has worked as a targeted case manager serving
the Ft. Lauderdale area. Sharon currently works at
Arthur Ashe Middle School in Fort Lauderdale as a
B.A.S.S. Family counselor.

Family Counselor
Cheryl Marino received her MSW from FIU after
graduating from FSU with a BS in Psychology. She
has 17 years of experience with the Dept. of
Children and Families in a variety of positions
including statewide Quality Assurance, Professional
Development Instructor at FIU and Child/Adult
Protective Services. She came to Broward county
Schools in 2001 as a Social Worker for the Headstart
program. She has been with the B.L.A.S.T. program
as a Family Counselor since 2004. Her areas of
research interest include grief and crisis
counseling as well as working with families of
special needs children. She is a Registered
Clinical Social Work Intern currently working
towards licensure.

Joel Monreal obtained his Bachelor's Degree in
Social Work from Florida Atlantic University in
August, 1997 and his Master's Degree in Social Work
from Florida International University in May 2000.
In June 2000, Joel worked in the domestic violence
arena as Shelter Director for the Park City Peace
House in Park City, Utah. In the Fall of 2002, Joel
relocated to San Diego California and worked as a
Trauma Therapist for the Children's Hospital of San
Diego. Joel has been with the School Board of
Broward County since Oct 2003. Currently, he
supervises the Broward Alliance for Student Success
program at six of the county's Middle Schools.

Title IV Coordinator
Amalio Nieves earned his B.S. in Elementary/
Secondary Education from Concordia University (River
Forest, IL) and his M.S in Educational Leadership
from Nova Southeastern University. He taught in the
Chicago Public School system for 10 years before
moving to Fort Lauderdale and teaching Technical
Theatre at North Andrews Gardens Elementary. Amalio
is a board member on the Florida Substance Abuse
Prevention Advisory Council and the United Way of
Broward County Commission on Substance Abuse. He
also sits on SBBC's Behavioral Partnership Committee
and is a member of the SEDNET Advisory. His
current interests include school culture, health,
classroom management, and child safety and welfare
issues.

Andy J. Rodriguez earned his M.A. in Social Service
Administration from the University of Chicago in
Chicago, Illinois. He has a Bachelor's Degree in
Social Work with a minor in Management from Calumet
College in Whiting, Indiana. He is certified in
Crisis Intervention and Gang Intervention. Winner
of the Youth Investment Award in 1994 from the State
of Indiana. His interest areas include gangs,
self-esteem, cutting, youth and family therapy.

Debra V. Rozsa has been with SBBC since 1983. She
has designed drug & health education prevention

her Bachelor in Science Degree from The University
of Texas at Austin. She has graduate work in
administrative leadership from Nova Southeastern
University.

Cynthia Tapia-Rodriguez earned her MSW from Fordham
University, New York. Undergraduate majors:
Women's Studies and Interpersonal Communication from
SUNY New Paltz, NY. She has a strong background in
child abuse prevention and empowering Latino
families to prevent foster care placement. She
worked with special educations students for 3 years
in NY. She also worked with Hispanic family victims
of 911. Her areas of interest include working with
children and teenagers.

Jennifer Thomas-Simmons, a Licensed Clinical Social
Worker, earned her MSW from Florida International
University and her Bachelors of Social Work from
Florida Atlantic University. She worked as a
supervisor in the field of child abuse and neglect
for 7 years prior to joining the School Board of
Broward County as a B.L.A.S.T Family Counselor.
Jennifer is a strong advocate of integrating
technology into prevention dissemination. Currently,
she is overseeing the Office of Prevention Program's
efforts to coordinate Child Abduction Prevention,
Internet Safety, Discovery Health, and Program
Development.

their emergency shelter for children. She has been

Stephani Weaver, a Prevention Specialist, has earned
a B.S. in English Education and M.Ed. in Guidance
from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She also
holds an Education Leadership Certification from
Florida Atlantic University and is a Certified
Addiction Prevention Professional in the state of
Florida. Stephani has been working with the Broward
County School District in the field of prevention
since 1985. Currently, she coordinates the school
district's Peer Counseling Program and suicide
prevention efforts. She also assists schools with
school based prevention clubs such as Students
Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) and Students
Working Against Tobacco (SWAT).

of Broward County for approximately seven years.
