Broward County Public Schools and the Office of Prevention, is committed to effectively addressing some of today’s most pressing and social problems. Adolescents and adults are unaware of how often dating violence occurs. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), in a nationwide survey, 9.8% of high school students reported being hit, slapped or physically hurt on purpose by their boyfriend or girlfriend. Therefore, the statistic compels Broward County Public Schools to increase efforts in the area of teen dating violence prevention education.

Look at the list below and see how many of the items apply to your relationship.

Are you going out with someone who:

  1. Is jealous and possessive; won’t let you have friends; checks up on you and won’t accept breaking up?
  2. Tries to control you by being bossy, giving orders, making all the decisions and not taking your opinions seriously?
  3. Puts you down in front of friends or tells you that you would be nothing without him or her?
  4. Scares you?
  5. Makes you worry about his or her reactions to things you say or do?
  6. Threatens you?
  7. Uses or owns guns or other weapons?
  8. Is violent?
  9. Has a history of fighting, losing his or her temper quickly or bragging about mistreating others?
  10. Grabs, pushes, shoves or hits you?
  11. Pressures you for sex or is forceful or scary about sex?
  12. Gets too serious about the relationship too fast?
  13. Abuses alcohol and/or other drugs and pressures you to take them?
  14. Has a history of failed relationships and blames the other person for all the problems?

How do you rate your relationship? Healthy or unhealthy/abusive. How many of the questions apply to your relationship? If two or more items apply, you are potentially in a relationship that can become abusive.
